The purpose of this interaction is to engage with the downtown community as an NBBJ studio that will soon call North High Street home. We will take advantage of this opportunity to come together to get to know the immediate surroundings of our new neighborhood as our studio retreat activity. Mindful of our firm values (manifesto), let’s see how we can translate them as actions on the everyday city street! This proposal for a team-based collaborative mapping activity achieves the combined objectives of team building, design content and gestures the new spirit of our evolving work culture. This program is guided by ongoing research (see references) in the fields of design and social sciences. It has been considerably condensed to suit a user-friendly half-day exercise. Group mapping exposes the importance of having a common language. One example of this skill can be tuned by measuring walkability that requires the mediation of individual perceptions. As such, we will develop a smart phone app to explore how field observation is linked to geospatial tools to deepen the discovery process for design. Furthermore, this experience will serve as a beta test in which we may solidify as we encounter new opportunities for deployment.
